Register as a student or graduate?

I'd like to start and be done with application for the exam process way ahead of the my desired eligibility period because I'm expecting to run into some mess (as the authorized individual to verify my documents has been succeeded by a rather uncooperative person). But here's the thing; I want to sit the exam 5 months after my graduation and I've been told its wise to apply at least 6 months before your desired eligibility period (in case there are obstacles and remove unnecessary worries during prep time). That means I should apply around 2 months before graduation, i.e. while I'm still a student. But instead of being at ease, will I be buying the hassle of changing my status from student to graduate before my exam? And also, when I could easily wait 1-2 months and start the apply as a graduate?

It'd be really helpful if someone gave me those answers :)
